(a) Abscisic acid (ABA) is called an antitranspirant because it acts on the guard cells of stomata to bring about their closure, particularly under water-stress conditions. ABA promotes the efflux of potassium (K+) and other ions out of the guard cells; this lowers the osmotic concentration and hence the turgor pressure of the guard cells, causing them to become flaccid and the stomatal pore to close. Since transpiration occurs mainly through open stomata, ABA-induced stomatal closure sharply reduces water loss from the plant, which is why ABA is described as an antitranspirant / stress hormone. …
