(a) Glycolysis: Glycolysis (the EMP pathway) is the process that converts one molecule of glucose (6-carbon) into two molecules of pyruvic acid (3-carbon), and it occurs in the cytoplasm of the cell, common to both aerobic and anaerobic respiration. The sequence of reactions is:
- Glucose is phosphorylated to glucose-6-phosphate (using ATP).
- Glucose-6-phosphate is converted to fructose-6-phosphate.
- Fructose-6-phosphate is phosphorylated to fructose-1,6-bisphosphate (using ATP).
- Fructose-1,6-bisphosphate splits into two 3-carbon molecules: dihydroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP) and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate (G3P) — these are interconvertible, and both eventually proceed through the pathway as G3P.
- G3P is oxidised and phosphorylated to 1,3-bisphosphoglyceric acid (with NAD+ reduced to NADH).
- 1,3-bisphosphoglyceric acid is converted to 3-phosphoglyceric acid (generating ATP).
- 3-phosphoglyceric acid is converted to 2-phosphoglyceric acid.
- 2-phosphoglyceric acid is dehydrated to phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP).
- PEP is converted to pyruvic acid (generating ATP).
The net yield of glycolysis (per glucose) is 2 pyruvic acid, a net gain of 2 ATP, and 2 NADH.
