The diagonal relationship occurs because moving one step right (across a period) decreases atomic/ionic size, while moving one step down (a group) increases it; moving diagonally (one right, one down) these two opposing changes roughly cancel out, leaving the diagonal elements with similar size and similar charge density, hence similar chemical properties.

The elements Li, Be, and B (the first three elements of period 2) each show a notable resemblance to the elements placed diagonally below-right of them in period 3: Li resembles Mg, Be resembles Al, and B resembles Si. This is called the diagonal relationship.
