The diagonal relationship describes how certain Period-2 elements resemble the Period-3 element diagonally below-and-to-the-right of them (e.g. Li and Mg) more closely than they resemble other members of their own group.

Certain elements of the second period (Li, Be, B, C) show a close chemical resemblance to the elements diagonally placed below them in the third period, one group to the right, rather than resembling the elements directly below them in their own group. This is called the diagonal relationship. It arises mainly because the diagonal pairs have similar ionic size / charge-density (polarising power), even though they belong to different groups.

Example: Lithium (Group 1, Period 2) shows a diagonal relationship with Magnesium (Group 2, Period 3), rather than closely resembling the other alkali metals (Na, K, etc.):

  • Both Li and Mg form a nitride directly by reaction with N2 (unlike other alkali metals).
  • Both LiOH and Mg(OH)2 are comparatively weak bases and decompose on heating to give the oxide. …
