The second law of thermodynamics states that the entropy of an isolated system tends to increase in any spontaneous process; it can also be stated in terms of heat flow direction or the impossibility of a perfect heat engine.

The second law of thermodynamics has several classical, equivalent statements:

  1. Entropy statement: The total entropy of an isolated system always increases in the course of a spontaneous (irreversible) change; entropy remains constant only for a reversible process. Mathematically, for an isolated system, ΔS_total ≥ 0.

  2. Clausius statement: It is impossible for heat to flow spontaneously from a colder body to a hotter body without the performance of external work.

  3. Kelvin-Planck statement: It is impossible to construct a machine (engine) that, operating in a cycle, converts heat completely into work without producing any other effect (i.e., no heat engine can have 100% efficiency).
