Kelvin-Planck: heat from one reservoir cannot be fully turned into work; Clausius: heat cannot flow unaided from cold to hot; both underlie heat engines and refrigerators.

Kelvin-Planck statement: It is impossible to construct a device operating in a cycle whose sole effect is to absorb heat from a single reservoir and convert it completely into work. In other words, no heat engine can have 100% efficiency; some heat must always be rejected to a colder reservoir.

Clausius statement: It is impossible to construct a device operating in a cycle whose sole effect is to transfer heat from a colder body to a hotter body. That is, heat cannot flow of its own accord from a lower to a higher temperature; external work must be supplied to do so.

(The two statements are logically equivalent — a violation of one implies a violation of the other.)
