For small angular displacement, a pendulum's restoring force reduces to F = -(mg/L)x, matching the SHM condition F = -kx, giving T = 2π√(L/g).

Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM): A type of periodic (oscillatory) motion in which the restoring force (and hence acceleration) acting on the particle is always directed towards a fixed equilibrium (mean) position, and its magnitude is directly proportional to the displacement of the particle from that position:

F = -kx

where k is a constant (force constant) and the negative sign shows the force opposes the displacement.

Showing pendulum motion is SHM: Consider a simple pendulum of length L and bob mass m, displaced through a small angle θ from the vertical. The restoring force along the arc (tangential direction) is provided by the component of gravity:

F = -mg sinθ

For small angles, sinθ ≈ θ (in radians), so:

F ≈ -mgθ
