From p = sqrt(2m x KE), momentum is proportional to the square root of kinetic energy; doubling KE therefore multiplies momentum by sqrt(2), not by 2.

The relation between kinetic energy (KE) and momentum (p) for a body of mass m is:

KE = p^2/2m, so p = sqrt(2m x KE)

Let the initial kinetic energy be KE, giving initial momentum p = sqrt(2m x KE).

If the kinetic energy is doubled, KE' = 2 x KE, the new momentum is:

p' = sqrt(2m x KE') = sqrt(2m x 2KE) = sqrt(2) x sqrt(2m x KE) = sqrt(2) x p
