Q.Which of the following species became extinct due to over-exploitation?

   (a) Passenger pigeon

   (b) Giant Panda

   (c) Nile Perch

   (d) 200 species of cichlid fish

   ›Reveal solutionSolution

The passenger pigeon was hunted to extinction, a classic example of extinction by over-exploitation.

When humans over-harvest a species faster than it can reproduce, it can be driven to extinction. The passenger pigeon of North America, once extremely abundant, was hunted intensively and became extinct in the early 20th century — a textbook case of over-exploitation. The giant panda is endangered (main …

Q.Fill in the blank with the correct answer: When human "need" is turned to "greed", it leads to ______ of natural resources.

   ›Reveal solutionSolution

Unchecked human greed for natural resources leads to their over-exploitation, a major cause of biodiversity loss.

Earth's resources are sufficient to satisfy the genuine needs of all living organisms, but not the unchecked greed of a single species. As human 'need' turns into 'greed', more and more natural resources — forests, fisheries, minerals, wildlife — are extracted faster than nature can replenish them. This over-exploitation is one of the four major causes of biodiversity loss (along with habitat loss/fragmentation, alien species …

Q.An important cause driving animals and plants to extinction is -

   (a) Co-extinctions

   (b) Alien species invasions

   (c) Ex-situ conservation

   (d) Hunting

   ›Reveal solutionSolution

Of the given options only ex-situ conservation is not a cause of extinction — it is a method used to prevent extinction — so it is the correct choice for this 'which is NOT a cause' question.

The major causes of species extinction include habitat loss, over-exploitation (such as hunting), alien-species invasions, and co-extinctions. Among the options here, co-extinctions (when a species going extinct takes its obligately-associated species with it), alien-species invasions (e.g. the Nile perch introduced into Lake Victoria, which wiped out more than 200 native cichlid species), and hunting (a form of over-exploitation) are all genuine drivers of extinction. Ex-situ conservation, by contrast, is a conse …

Q.Identify the cause of extinction of dodo in Mauritius island in the Indian Ocean.

   ›Reveal solutionSolution

The dodo was driven to extinction by direct hunting and by predation from animals introduced by humans onto Mauritius.

The dodo (Raphus cucullatus) was a large, flightless bird endemic to the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, with no natural predators before humans arrived. Once Dutch sailors settled on the island (from the late 16th century), the dodo was hunted for food, as it was slow-moving, ground-dwelling, and had no fear of humans. In addition, the settlers introduced animals such as pigs, dogs, rats, and monkeys to the island; these animals preyed on dodo eggs and chicks in ground nests, and also competed for/destroyed its forest habitat. This combination of direct human hunting and predation/habitat loss from introduced species wiped out the entire dodo population within about a century of human contac …

Q.Assertion (A) : Loss of biodiversity can occur due to overexploitation of resources. Reason (R) : Introduction of Clarias gariepinus in Indian rivers has led to a decline in native Indian fishes. (A) Both Assertion (A) and Reason (R) are true and Reason (R) is the correct explanation of the Assertion (A). (B) Both Assertion (A) and Reason (R) are true, but Reason (R) is not the correct explanation of the Assertion (A). (C) Assertion (A) is true, but Reason (R) is false. (D) Assertion (A) is false, but Reason (R) is true.

   ›Reveal solutionSolution

The assertion is true — overexploitation does cause biodiversity loss. The reason is also true — Clarias gariepinus has harmed native fishes. But the reason is a specific example of invasive species, not of overexploitation, so it does not explain the assertion. The correct option is (B).

This is a classic "Assertion–Reason" question from ecology. The trick is to check two things independently: first, whether each statement is factually correct; second, whether the reason actually explains why the assertion is true — not just whether both are true.

   Let’s break it down.

   1. Check Assertion (A): "Loss of biodiversity can occur due to overexploitation of resources."

Overexploitation means harvesting a species faster than it can reproduce — think overfishing, excessive hunting, or logging beyond regeneration. This directly reduces population sizes and can drive species to extinction. So yes, this is a well-established cause of biodiversity loss. Assertion (A) is true.

   2. Check Reason (R): "Introduction of Clarias gariepinus in Indian rivers has led to a decline in native Indian fishes."

Clarias gariepinus (the African catfish) is an invasive species introduced for aquaculture. It is aggressive, predatory, and outcompetes native fish for food and habitat. Its introduction has indeed caused declines in several native fish species in Indian rivers. So Reason (R) is also true.

   3. Now the critical link: Does (R) correctly explain (A)?

      (A) says biodiversity loss happens due to overexploitation. (R) describes biodiversity loss due to an invasive species. These are two different mechanisms. Overexploitation is direct human harvesting; invasive species introduction is a separate threat (often called "biological invasion"). The reason does not illustrate overexploitation — it illustrates a different cause. Therefore, (R) is not the correct explanation of (A). …

Q.What is 'The Evil Quartet' in biodiversity loses?

   ›Reveal solutionSolution

The term 'Evil Quartet' collectively names the four principal drivers responsible for the accelerating loss of biological diversity.

Biodiversity is being lost at an alarming rate mainly due to four interacting causes: (1) Habitat loss and fragmentation — destruction/breaking-up of natural habitats (e.g., deforestation) is the single most important cause; (2) Over-exploitation — excessive harvesting of species for human use has driven many, like Steller's sea cow and the passenger pigeon, to extinction; (3) Alien species invasions — accidental or intentional introduction of exotic species can outcompete/prey upon native species (e.g., the Nile perch in Lake Victoria); (4) Co-extinctions — when …

   ›Reveal solutionSolution

"The Evil Quartet" (a term used by biologist Jared Diamond) names the four leading causes of species/biodiversity loss.

The term "The Evil Quartet" was coined (by Jared Diamond) to describe the four major, most significant causes of biodiversity loss worldwide:

   1. Habitat loss and fragmentation — the single most important cause, e.g., destruction of tropical rainforests.
   2. Over-exploitation — excessive harvesting of species by humans, causing extinction (e.g., Steller's sea cow, passenger pigeon). …

   (d) (i),

   (iii) only

   ›Reveal solutionSolution

Habitat fragmentation creates smaller patches that suffer from reduced populations of large animals, decreased biodiversity, and increased competition from surrounding areas, making statements (ii), (iii), and (iv) correct.

   Concept and Intuition

Habitat fragmentation is the process by which large, continuous habitats are divided into smaller, isolated patches. This often occurs due to human activities like deforestation, urbanization, and agriculture. Understanding how a small patch differs from a large patch of the same habitat is crucial for conservation biology. The key concepts at play here are:

   1. Area Effect: Smaller areas can support fewer individuals and fewer species. This is a fundamental principle of ecology, often explained by the theory of island biogeography, which states that species richness on an island (or a habitat patch) is a balance between immigration and extinction rates. Smaller islands have higher extinction rates and lower immigration rates.
   2. Edge Effect: Smaller patches have a higher proportion of their area exposed to the "edge" – the boundary with the surrounding altered landscape (matrix). Edges often have different environmental conditions (e.g., more light, wind, temperature fluctuations, increased predation risk, increased exposure to human disturbance) compared to the interior of a large patch. These edge effects can penetrate deep into small patches, affecting the species within.
   3. Isolation: Fragmented patches are often isolated from each other, making it difficult for species to move between them. This reduces gene flow and makes populations more vulnerable to local extinction.

These factors collectively lead to significant ecological changes in small habitat patches compared to large, continuous ones.

   Step-by-Step Analysis

   Let's evaluate each statement:

   1. Statement (i): Invasive species will never be seen here.

      • Reasoning: This statement is incorrect. Small habitat patches, due to their increased edge-to-interior ratio, are often more susceptible to invasion by exotic or generalist species from the surrounding disturbed matrix. The altered conditions at the edge (e.g., increased light, nutrient runoff, human disturbance) can create opportunities for invasive species to establish and outcompete native species. The word "never" makes this statement definitively false.

   2. Statement (ii): Population of large animals decreases.

      • Reasoning: This statement is correct. Large animals, such as top predators or large herbivores, typically require extensive home ranges to find sufficient food, mates, and suitable breeding sites. Small habitat patches simply cannot provide the necessary space and resources to sustain viable populations of these species. Their populations will decline, and they may even disappear entirely from small patches. This is a direct consequence of the area effect.

   3. Statement (iii): Biodiversity decreases. …

    Q.Explain one reason of deforestation.

    ›Reveal solutionSolution

Deforestation is largely driven by the conversion of forest land to agricultural and other human-use land, which is also a leading cause of habitat loss and biodiversity decline.

Deforestation refers to the large-scale removal or clearing of forests. A major reason for it is the clearing of forest land to create space for agriculture, human settlements, grazing land, roads, mining and industries, driven by the demands of a rapidly increasing human population. Timber extraction and commercial logging are also significant contributors.

    ›Reveal solutionSolution

Among the given choices, radiation is the most dangerous threat to the existence of life because it causes lasting genetic damage.

Concept. All three options are threats, but they differ in how deeply and how permanently they harm life. Desertification and deforestation degrade habitats and reduce biodiversity, but their effects are largely at the level of ecosystems and can, in principle, be reversed by restoration.

Q.What causes the loss of biodiversity?

    (a) Habitat degradation

    (b) Invasion of non-native species

    (c) Pollution

    (d) All of the above

    ›Reveal solutionSolution

Loss of biodiversity is multi-causal; habitat degradation, invasive species and pollution are all recognised major drivers, so the comprehensive option is correct.

The major causes of biodiversity loss (the "Evil Quartet")

    1. Habitat loss and fragmentation — destruction of tropical rainforests, wetland drainage and degradation of habitats due to deforestation, agriculture and urbanisation is the single most important cause of extinction of wildlife.
    2. Over-exploitation — hunting and overharvesting have driven species like the passenger pigeon and Steller's sea cow to extinction.
    3. Alien/invasive species introduction — non-native species introduced deliberately or accidentally (e.g., the Nile perch in Lake Victoria, water hyacinth) compete with, prey upon, or bring disease to native species, causing declines and extinctions. …
