The 'Evil Quartet' = the four main causes of the present accelerated loss of biodiversity — habitat loss & fragmentation, over-exploitation, alien species invasion, and co-extinctions.

The accelerated rate of species extinctions that the world is facing is largely due to human activities. The four major causes (called 'The Evil Quartet') are:

  1. Habitat loss and fragmentation — This is the most important cause. Destruction of forests (e.g. the Amazon rainforest, the 'lungs of the planet') and breaking up of large habitats into small fragments deprives species of their homes. Fragmentation harms especially animals needing large territories and migratory animals.

  2. Over-exploitation — Overuse of natural resources by humans (over-hunting, over-fishing) has driven many species to extinction, e.g. Steller's sea cow and the passenger pigeon.
