Charles Darwin (with Alfred Russel Wallace independently arriving at the same idea) proposed Natural Selection — organisms with favourable heritable variations survive and reproduce more successfully, gradually changing the population over generations.

Proposer: The theory of Natural Selection was proposed by Charles Darwin in his book "On the Origin of Species" (1859), based on observations made during his voyage on the HMS Beagle. Alfred Russel Wallace independently arrived at a very similar idea around the same time, and both scientists jointly presented the theory before the Linnean Society in 1858.

Explanation of the theory in detail:

  1. Overproduction: Organisms have the potential to produce far more offspring than the environment can support (e.g., a single female fish lays thousands of eggs).

  2. Struggle for existence: Because resources (food, space, mates) are limited, not all offspring can survive — there is constant competition among individuals for these limited resources, both with members of their own species and with other species and the physical environment.

  3. Variation: Individuals within a population show heritable variations — no two individuals are exactly identical. These variations may be advantageous, neutral, or disadvantageous with respect to the prevailing environmental conditions.

  4. Survival of the fittest / Differential reproduction: Individuals with variations that make them better suited (fitter) to their environment are more likely to survive and successfully reproduce than those with less favourable variations. Darwin called this process "Natural Selection" — nature "selects" the fitter individuals, analogous to how a breeder artificially selects desirable traits.
