Darwin's Theory of Natural Selection (published in 'On the Origin of Species', 1859) proposed that organisms change over generations through differential survival and reproduction of the fittest variants.

Darwin observed that organisms produce more offspring than the environment can support, that individuals show heritable variations, and that individuals better suited to the environment survive and reproduce more successfully ('survival of the fittest').
