Cancer detection relies on imaging (X-rays, CT, MRI), biopsy for tissue examination, blood tests for tumour markers, and molecular techniques; treatment combines surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, often supported by immunotherapy and hormonal therapy depending on cancer type and stage.

Cancer detection and treatment have evolved into a multi-pronged strategy that combines early identification with targeted intervention. The challenge lies in catching malignant transformations before they spread, and then deploying therapies that eliminate cancer cells while sparing normal tissue as much as possible.

Methods of Cancer Detection

Early diagnosis dramatically improves survival rates, so modern oncology employs several complementary approaches to identify cancers at treatable stages.

Biopsy remains the gold standard for confirming cancer. A small piece of suspected tissue is removed and examined under a microscope by a histopathologist. The cellular architecture, nuclear abnormalities, and growth patterns reveal whether cells have turned malignant. This method provides definitive proof and helps classify the cancer type.

Imaging techniques allow doctors to visualize tumours inside the body without invasive procedures:

  • Radiography (X-rays) can detect masses in bones, lungs, and other dense tissues
  • Computed Tomography (CT scan) uses X-rays from multiple angles to create detailed cross-sectional images, revealing tumour size and location
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) employs strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce high-resolution images of soft tissues, particularly useful for brain and spinal tumours

Blood and bone marrow tests detect certain cancers through abnormal cell counts or the presence of tumour markers—specific proteins or substances released by cancer cells into the bloodstream. Elevated levels of alpha-fetoprotein might indicate liver cancer, while PSA (prostate-specific antigen) helps screen for prostate cancer.

Note

Tumour markers are not foolproof; elevated levels can sometimes occur in non-cancerous conditions, which is why they're used alongside other diagnostic methods rather than in isolation.

Molecular biology techniques have revolutionized detection. Techniques like polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) can identify cancer-specific genetic mutations or proteins even when tumours are microscopic, enabling detection at the earliest possible stage.

Common Approaches for Cancer Treatment

Treatment strategy depends on the cancer type, stage, location, and the patient's overall health. Most protocols combine multiple modalities for maximum effectiveness.

Surgery is often the first line of attack for solid tumours. The surgeon removes the cancerous mass along with a margin of surrounding healthy tissue to ensure no malignant cells remain. When cancer is localized and hasn't metastasized, surgery can be curative. However, it's impractical for blood cancers like leukaemia or when tumours have spread to multiple sites.

Radiotherapy uses high-energy radiation—typically X-rays, gamma rays, or particle beams—to kill cancer cells by damaging their DNA beyond repair. The radiation is carefully focused on the tumour to minimize harm to surrounding healthy tissue. Radiotherapy can shrink tumours before surgery, eliminate remaining cells after surgery, or serve as the primary treatment when surgery isn't feasible. The challenge is that rapidly dividing normal cells (in bone marrow, intestinal lining, hair follicles) also suffer damage, causing side effects like nausea, hair loss, and fatigue. …
