Clemmensen reduction is an acidic method to fully deoxygenate a carbonyl group to a methylene (-CH2-) group.

Aldehydes and ketones can be reduced completely — carbonyl oxygen removed entirely — to the corresponding hydrocarbon by treating them with zinc amalgam [Zn(Hg)] and concentrated hydrochloric acid, typically under reflux. This method works well for carbonyl compounds that are stable to strong acid (it fails for acid-sensitive substrates, where the Wolff-Kishner reduction, run under basic conditions, is used instead).
