Clemmensen reduction reduces C=OC{=}O to CH2CH_2 using Zn(Hg)/conc. HCl; it is used when the molecule does not contain acid-sensitive groups.

Clemmensen reduction: Aldehydes and ketones, on treatment with zinc amalgam [Zn(Hg)] and concentrated hydrochloric acid, are reduced to the corresponding hydrocarbon — the carbonyl oxygen is completely removed and replaced by two hydrogens:

R2C=O→conc. HClZn(Hg)R2CH2R_2C{=}O \xrightarrow[\text{conc. HCl}]{Zn(Hg)} R_2CH_2

Since it uses a strongly acidic medium, Clemmensen reduction is preferred for carbonyl compounds that do not contain acid-sensitive functional groups.
