A photon is the particle-like quantum of light, with energy and momentum fixed by its frequency/wavelength.

According to Einstein's quantum (photon) picture of light, electromagnetic radiation is emitted and absorbed not continuously but in discrete packets called photons. Each photon behaves like a particle with definite energy, travelling at the speed of light.

Two key properties:

  1. Energy: A photon carries energy E=hν=hcλE = h\nu = \dfrac{hc}{\lambda}, where hh is Planck's constant, ν\nu is the frequency, and λ\lambda the wavelength of the radiation — energy depends only on frequency, not intensity.
  2. Momentum: A photon carries momentum p=hλ=Ecp = \dfrac{h}{\lambda} = \dfrac{E}{c}, even though it has zero rest mass; it moves at the speed of light cc and is deflected by neither electric nor magnetic fields (being uncharged). …
