μr\mu_r compares a material's permeability to that of free space, and equals 1+χ1+\chi where χ\chi is the magnetic susceptibility.

Definition: The relative permeability (μr\mu_r) of a magnetic material is the ratio of the permeability of the material (μ\mu) to the permeability of free space (μ0\mu_0):

μr=μμ0\mu_r = \frac{\mu}{\mu_0}

It is a dimensionless quantity and indicates how much more (or less) magnetic field a material can support inside itself compared to vacuum, for the same magnetising field.
