The polarising angle is derived using Snell's law together with the geometric condition that reflected and refracted rays are perpendicular at that angle.

Definition: The polarising angle θp\theta_p (Brewster's angle) is the angle of incidence at an interface between two media at which the reflected light is completely (linearly) polarised, with its electric field vibrations perpendicular to the plane of incidence.

Derivation: At the polarising angle, it is found experimentally (and can be shown from electromagnetic theory) that the reflected ray and the refracted ray are perpendicular to each other, i.e.

θp+θr=90∘  ⟹  θr=90∘−θp\theta_p + \theta_r = 90^\circ \implies \theta_r = 90^\circ - \theta_p
