Using Brewster's law the angle of refraction is 60°; alternatively, a 1 m telescope objective at λ = 4538 Å has resolving power ≈ 1.81×10⁶ rad⁻¹.

Polarising angle → angle of refraction: By Brewster's law, at the polarising angle θp\theta_p the reflected and refracted rays are mutually perpendicular, i.e. θp+θr=90∘\theta_p + \theta_r = 90^\circ. Given θp=30∘\theta_p = 30^\circ: θr=90∘−30∘=60∘\theta_r = 90^\circ - 30^\circ = 60^\circ.

OR — Resolving power of a telescope: The limit of resolution (smallest angular separation that can be resolved) is Δθ=1.22 λa\Delta\theta = \dfrac{1.22\,\lambda}{a}, where aa is the objective's aperture (diameter) and λ\lambda the wavelength. Resolving power is the reciprocal, RP=1Δθ=a1.22 λRP = \dfrac{1}{\Delta\theta} = \dfrac{a}{1.22\,\lambda}.
