The Straight Line Method (SLM) of depreciation has several practical advantages that make it a widely used method.

Merits of the Straight Line Method:

  1. Simplicity — It is very easy to understand and calculate; once the cost, scrap value and useful life are known, the same depreciation figure is used every year without further computation.
  2. Equal yearly charge — Since depreciation is a fixed/equal amount each year, it makes year-to-year profits easier to compare, as the depreciation burden doesn't distort comparisons the way a changing figure would.
  3. Asset reduced to zero/scrap value exactly — The asset's book value reaches precisely its estimated scrap value (or zero) exactly at the end of its estimated useful life, since the total depreciation charged equals (Cost − Scrap Value) by design.
  4. Suitable for assets with equal utility each year — It suits assets that provide a fairly uniform level of service over their life, such as leasehold property, patents, or furniture, where usage/benefit doesn't vary much year on year. …
