The imprest amount is the fixed sum of money handed to the petty cashier at the start of a period to meet petty expenses. It is replenished each period by the amount spent, so the petty cashier always begins with the same fixed float.

Meaning. Under the imprest (or 'advance') system of maintaining the petty cash book, the head cashier estimates the small expenses likely to arise in a period (a week, fortnight or month) and gives the petty cashier that estimated sum in advance. This advance is called the imprest amount or imprest money.

How it works.

  1. The petty cashier receives the imprest amount at the beginning of the period.
  2. He makes small payments out of it and records them in the petty cash book.
  3. At the end of the period he submits the book, and the head cashier reimburses exactly the total amount spent.
  4. After reimbursement the petty cashier again holds the full imprest amount, so the cash balance in hand at the start of each period is always the same.
