New organic farmers struggle mainly because early yields are lower (so incomes fall), infrastructure and marketing for organic produce are lacking, awareness is poor, the produce looks blemished and spoils faster, and off-season crop choice is limited.

Problems faced in the initial years

When farmers shift from conventional chemical-based farming to organic farming, the early years are the hardest. The main problems are:

  • Lower yields in the beginning — organic farming yields less than modern chemical (Green Revolution) agriculture, especially during the initial transition years when the soil is recovering. This means reduced output and income, which discourages farmers who cannot afford a fall in earnings.

  • Inadequate infrastructure and marketing — the country lacks proper infrastructure and a marketing system for organic produce, so farmers find it hard to sell what they grow at a good price.

  • Lack of awareness and knowledge — many farmers are not aware of organic techniques (composting, biofertilisers, biological pest control) and need training and extension support, which is often missing.

  • Appearance and shelf-life problems — organic produce has more blemishes and a shorter shelf-life than chemically grown produce, so it is less attractive to buyers and harder to market. …
