Sclerenchyma occurs in two forms: fibres (long, tapering cells, e.g. in vascular bundles) and sclereids (short, sclerified, irregular cells, e.g. in nut shells and pear flesh).

Sclerenchyma is a simple permanent tissue composed of cells with thick, lignified secondary walls, usually with very few or no interspaces. The cells are dead at maturity, i.e. they lack protoplasm, which makes them well suited to provide mechanical support.

1. Fibres — long, narrow, and tapering (spindle-shaped) cells, usually occurring in groups/bundles. They provide tensile strength and are commonly associated with vascular bundles (e.g. jute, hemp fibres).
