In a transverse section of a typical dicot stem, the tissues are arranged, from outside to inside, as follows:
-
Epidermis: The outermost, single layer of compactly arranged cells, covered by a cuticle; bears stomata and sometimes multicellular trichomes (hairs).
-
Cortex (three regions):
- Hypodermis: A few layers just below the epidermis, made of collenchyma, providing mechanical strength while permitting growth.
- General cortex: Several layers of thin-walled, rounded parenchyma cells with intercellular spaces; the outer cells may contain chloroplasts.
- Endodermis (starch sheath): The innermost layer of the cortex, its cells rich in starch grains, marking the boundary between cortex and stele.
-
Stele (everything inside the endodermis):
- Pericycle: A few layers just inside the endodermis, often present as discontinuous patches of sclerenchyma (giving extra mechanical support) alternating with parenchyma.
- Vascular bundles: Arranged in a single ring surrounding the pith. Each bundle is conjoint (xylem and phloem in the same bundle), collateral (phloem located only on the outer side of xylem) and open (a strip of cambium is present between the xylem and phloem, allowing secondary growth). Phloem (outermost part of each bundle) consists of sieve tubes, companion cells and phloem parenchyma. Xylem (innermost part) is arranged with protoxylem toward the centre and metaxylem toward the periphery — an endarch arrangement.
- Medullary rays: Parenchymatous regions between adjacent vascular bundles, connecting the cortex to the pith. …
