Phylum Porifera comprises the sponges — simple, mostly marine, sessile animals with a cellular level of organisation, a body full of pores, and a water-canal system built around flagellated choanocytes.

Key characteristic features of Porifera:

  1. Habitat: Mostly marine (a few, like Spongilla, are freshwater); commonly called sponges.
  2. Level of organisation: Cellular level of organisation — cells perform their functions individually and are not organised into true tissues or organs.
  3. Body form: Sedentary (attached to a substratum), with an asymmetrical or, in some, radially symmetrical body.
  4. Pores and canal system: The body wall is perforated by numerous minute pores called ostia, through which water enters an internal cavity, the spongocoel, and leaves through a large opening, the osculum. This constitutes the characteristic water/canal system, essential for feeding, respiration, and removal of waste.
  5. Choanocytes: Special flagellated cells called choanocytes (collar cells) line the spongocoel/canals; their flagellar beating drives the water current and traps food particles.
  6. Skeleton: The body is supported by an internal skeleton made of spicules (calcareous or siliceous) or spongin fibres, which gives sponges their characteristic texture. …
