General characteristics of Monera (bacteria):
-
Cell organisation: Monerans are prokaryotic — the genetic material (a single circular DNA) lies free in the cytoplasm as a nucleoid, not enclosed by a nuclear membrane. Membrane-bound organelles (mitochondria, plastids, ER, Golgi, etc.) are absent.
-
Size and cell number: They are unicellular, and among the smallest living organisms, ranging roughly 0.2–10 μm.
-
Cell wall: Most bacteria possess a rigid cell wall (chemically distinct from plant cell walls, generally made of peptidoglycan/murein). Some (like mycoplasma) lack a cell wall.
-
Shape: Bacteria show four basic shapes — spherical (coccus), rod-shaped (bacillus), comma-shaped (vibrio), and spiral (spirillum).
-
Motility: Many bacteria are motile using flagella; some show gliding or other movement.
-
Nutrition: Monerans show great diversity of nutrition — autotrophic (photosynthetic or chemosynthetic) as well as heterotrophic (saprophytic, parasitic, or symbiotic).
