Lichens are a symbiotic association of two components — a fungus (mycobiont) and an alga or cyanobacterium (phycobiont) — each contributing a different function to the composite organism.

A lichen's structure is built from exactly two partners, in intimate physical and physiological association:

  1. Mycobiont (fungal component): Usually an ascomycete (sometimes a basidiomycete) fungus that forms the bulk of the lichen body (thallus). It provides:
    • Protection to the algal partner from desiccation and strong light.
    • Absorption of water and minerals from the substrate, and anchorage to the surface (rock, bark, soil) on which the lichen grows.
  2. Phycobiont (algal component): A green alga (e.g. Trebouxia) or a cyanobacterium (e.g. Nostoc) enclosed within the fungal tissue. It provides:
    • Food to the fungal partner through photosynthesis, since the phycobiont is autotrophic. …
