Phycobiont and mycobiont are the algal and fungal partners of a lichen — the alga (phycobiont) makes food, while the fungus (mycobiont) provides shelter and absorbs water and minerals.

Lichens are symbiotic associations — that is, mutually useful associations — between algae and fungi. The two components have special names:
