Plastids are plant-cell organelles classed by pigment content into chloroplasts (green, photosynthetic), chromoplasts (coloured), and leucoplasts (colourless, storage).

Plastids are double membrane-bound organelles found in plant cells and some protists, and are broadly classified into three types based on the pigments they contain:

  1. Chloroplasts: these contain the green pigment chlorophyll (along with some carotenoids), which is essential for photosynthesis — the process by which plants make their own food using sunlight. Chloroplasts are found mainly in the green parts of the plant, especially leaves, and have an internal system of membranous sacs called thylakoids, arranged in stacks called grana, embedded in a matrix called the stroma.

  2. Chromoplasts: these contain pigments other than chlorophyll, mainly carotenoids (yellow, orange, red pigments such as carotene and xanthophyll). They are responsible for the characteristic colours of many flowers (e.g., marigold) and ripe fruits (e.g., tomato), which help attract pollinators and seed dispersers.

  3. Leucoplasts: these are colourless plastids, typically found in underground parts of the plant and other non-photosynthetic tissues, and are specialised for the storage of food reserves. They are further divided into: …
