Plastids perform two broad kinds of functions: chloroplasts carry out photosynthesis, while chromoplasts and leucoplasts contribute pigmentation and storage roles respectively.

Plastids are double membrane-bound organelles found in plant cells and are of three main types based on the pigments they contain:
