Both cretinism and myxoedema are caused by hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone); cretinism affects children (impairing growth and mental development) while myxoedema affects adults (slowing metabolism and causing tissue swelling) — both are treated with thyroid hormone replacement.

Cause: Both conditions result from an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism), most commonly due to iodine deficiency in the diet (iodine being essential for synthesising the thyroid hormones T3 and T4), or from other causes of thyroid gland dysfunction. The difference between the two conditions lies chiefly in the age of onset.

Cretinism (hypothyroidism present from infancy/childhood):

  • Symptoms: stunted physical growth (dwarfism), mental retardation and low intelligence, coarse and dry skin, a protruding abdomen (potbelly), a puffy face with a broad flat nose, and delayed bone development.
  • Treatment: early diagnosis is critical — thyroid hormone (thyroxine) supplementation, together with adequate dietary iodine, started as early as possible in infancy to prevent irreversible mental and physical impairment.
