The thyroid gland secretes T3 and T4, which regulate the basal metabolic rate of almost all body tissues, and are essential for normal growth (including of the skeleton and nervous system) and for maintaining the balance of water and electrolytes in the body.
Hypothyroidism (under-secretion of thyroid hormones):
- Goitre: Often caused by iodine deficiency, since iodine is essential for T3/T4 synthesis. Low hormone levels remove negative feedback on the pituitary, so excess TSH is secreted, causing the thyroid gland to enlarge (simple goitre).
- In children: Hyposecretion of thyroid hormones during growth leads to cretinism - characterised by stunted body growth, mental retardation, low intelligence, deaf-mutism, and abnormal skin.
- In adults: Hyposecretion causes myxedema - characterised by low metabolic rate, weight gain, puffiness/swelling of facial tissue, lethargy, and reduced tolerance to cold.
Hyperthyroidism (over-secretion of thyroid hormones):
- Commonly caused by Grave's disease (an autoimmune condition where antibodies over-stimulate the thyroid).
- Increases the basal metabolic rate, causing weight loss despite increased appetite, excessive sweating, increased heart rate (tachycardia) and blood pressure, nervousness, tremors, and heat intolerance. …
