Ureotelic animals excrete urea and need moderate water; uricotelic animals excrete uric acid (near-solid) and conserve water — the difference reflects habitat and water availability.

Ammonia produced from protein breakdown is highly toxic, so animals convert it to less toxic forms before excreting it. Based on the chief nitrogenous excretory product, animals are classified as ammonotelic, ureotelic or uricotelic.

Ureotelic organisms:

  • Excrete nitrogenous waste chiefly as urea.
  • Urea is moderately toxic and moderately soluble, so a moderate amount of water is needed to excrete it.
  • Urea is formed in the liver (ornithine/urea cycle).
  • Examples: mammals, many adult amphibians (frogs, toads), marine bony fishes and terrapins.

Uricotelic organisms:

  • Excrete nitrogenous waste chiefly as uric acid, passed out as a whitish, semi-solid paste or pellet. …
