Animals fall into three groups by nitrogenous waste type: ammonotelic (ammonia), ureotelic (urea), and uricotelic (uric acid).

Protein and nucleic acid metabolism generates nitrogenous wastes, which different animal groups excrete in different chemical forms depending largely on the availability of water in their habitat:

  1. Ammonotelic animals — excrete nitrogenous waste directly as ammonia, which is highly toxic and needs a lot of water to be flushed out safely. This is possible for animals with abundant access to water. Examples: many bony fishes, aquatic amphibians (tadpoles), and aquatic invertebrates.

  2. Ureotelic animals — convert the more toxic ammonia into urea (a less toxic compound) in the liver via the ornithine cycle, before excretion; this requires less water than ammonia excretion. Examples: mammals (including humans), terrestrial amphibians (e.g., adult frogs), and marine (cartilaginous) fishes.
