A flower is morphologically a modified shoot, with the shoot apex converted into a floral meristem that produces different kinds of floral appendages at successive nodes on a condensed axis. These appendages are borne as four separate whorls on the swollen end of the flower stalk, called the thalamus or receptacle.
- The calyx, made up of individual sepals, forms the outermost whorl, generally green and leaf-like, and its main role is to enclose and protect the more delicate inner parts while the flower is still a bud.
- The corolla, made up of petals, lies just inside the calyx and is usually brightly coloured, its main role being to attract pollinators such as insects.
- The androecium, made up of stamens, comes next and is the male reproductive whorl, each stamen consisting of a filament and an anther containing pollen sacs.
