Algae are classified into Chlorophyceae (green algae, freshwater, starch), Phaeophyceae (brown algae, marine, laminarin/mannitol) and Rhodophyceae (red algae, marine, floridean starch), based on pigmentation, habitat and stored food.

1. Chlorophyceae (Green algae):

  • Habitat: Commonly found in freshwater (both still and running water), some in moist soil, moist stones, and in brackish/marine water too.
  • Pigments: Chlorophyll a and b are dominant, giving them a grass-green colour.
  • Reserve food: Stored as starch, in the form of a special chloroplast structure called a pyrenoid.
  • Examples: Chlamydomonas, Volvox, Ulothrix, Spirogyra.

2. Phaeophyceae (Brown algae):

  • Habitat: Found mostly in marine (coastal, cold-water) habitats, ranging from simple filamentous forms to giant kelps.
  • Pigments: Chlorophyll a and c, carotenoids, and abundant fucoxanthin (a xanthophyll), which gives the brown colour.
  • Reserve food: Stored as complex carbohydrates like laminarin and the sugar alcohol mannitol.
  • Examples: Ectocarpus, Dictyota, Laminaria, Sargassum, Fucus.

3. Rhodophyceae (Red algae): …
