Respiration is the controlled, enzyme-catalysed oxidation of organic food (glucose) within cells to release chemical energy, which is trapped as ATP; this ATP is the universal energy currency that powers virtually all metabolic and physiological work of the organism.

Definition. Respiration is the catabolic process in which respiratory substrates (chiefly carbohydrates, e.g. glucose) are broken down step-wise inside living cells with the help of enzymes, releasing energy. Part of this energy is trapped in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) and the rest is released as heat.

C6H12O6 + 6O2 -> 6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy (as ATP + heat)

Respiration occurs mainly in the mitochondria (for the aerobic, oxygen-using stages) after an initial cytoplasmic stage (glycolysis).

Utility of Respiration.

  1. It is the primary source of usable energy (ATP) for the cell — without it, no energy-requiring process could occur.
  2. The ATP generated drives active absorption of water and minerals by roots, cell division and growth, movement of cytoplasm and organelles, and the biosynthesis of proteins, lipids, nucleic acids and other biomolecules. …
