Respiration is the process of oxidising food molecules within cells to release usable chemical energy (ATP).

Cellular respiration is a catabolic (breaking-down) process in which organic respiratory substrates — usually glucose — are progressively oxidised inside cells, releasing the chemical energy locked within their bonds. In aerobic respiration (the common form in most organisms), glucose is completely broken down using oxygen through glycolysis, the Krebs cycle, and the electron transport chain, yielding carbon dioxide, water, and a large amount of ATP (about 36-38 ATP per glucose molecule).
