The frog's external body plan — smooth moist skin, head-trunk body with no tail, webbed hind limbs, bulging eyes and a visible tympanum — is well adapted to its amphibious lifestyle.

The frog (a commonly studied example is Rana tigrina) is a cold-blooded (poikilothermic), amphibious vertebrate whose external anatomy shows clear adaptations to living both in water and on land:

  1. Body divisions: the body is divisible into just two regions — a head and a trunk. Unlike most other vertebrates, adult frogs have no neck and no external tail (the larval tadpole has a tail, which is lost during metamorphosis).

  2. Skin: the skin is smooth, soft, moist and slimy, kept moist by mucus-secreting glands, which is important for cutaneous (skin) respiration, especially underwater. Dorsally the skin is dark olive-green or brownish with dark, irregular spots (providing camouflage), while ventrally it is pale yellowish-white.

  3. Limbs: there are two pairs of limbs. The forelimbs are short, ending in four digits, used mainly to break the fall on landing. The hindlimbs are much longer and more muscular, ending in five webbed digits, adapted for powerful jumping on land and swimming in water.

  4. Head features: the head bears a pair of external nostrils near the tip of the snout for breathing, a pair of large, bulging eyes (each protected by a nictitating membrane — a thin, transparent third eyelid that keeps the eye moist and protected underwater), and a wide mouth.
