The solubility product is the equilibrium constant for the dissolution of a sparingly soluble ionic solid; write it as the product of ion concentrations, each raised to its coefficient in the balanced dissolution equation.

Definition: For a sparingly soluble salt in equilibrium with its saturated solution, the solubility product (Ksp) is the product of the molar concentrations of its constituent ions, each raised to the power equal to the number of ions of that type produced per formula unit, at a given temperature. It is a special case of the equilibrium constant where the solid itself is not included (its activity is taken as 1).

  1. For BaCO3(s) ⇌ Ba2+(aq) + CO3^2-(aq): Ksp = [Ba2+][CO3^2-]
  2. For Ag2CrO4(s) ⇌ 2Ag+(aq) + CrO4^2-(aq): …
