Le Chatelier: equilibrium opposes an imposed change. Raise T → less NH3 (exothermic); raise P → more NH3 (fewer product moles).

Le Chatelier's Principle: If a system at equilibrium is subjected to a change in concentration, temperature, pressure, or volume, the equilibrium shifts in the direction that tends to counteract (partially nullify) the effect of that change.

For N2(g)+3H2(g)⇌2NH3(g); ΔH=−92.4 kJN_2(g) + 3H_2(g) \rightleftharpoons 2NH_3(g);\ \Delta H = -92.4\ kJ (exothermic, and 4 mol of gaseous reactants form 2 mol of gaseous product):

  • Effect of temperature: since the forward reaction is exothermic (releases heat), increasing temperature shifts the equilibrium backward (favours the reactants, decomposing NH3NH_3, since the system tries to absorb the extra heat); decreasing temperature shifts it forward (favours NH3NH_3 formation). …
