Heterocyclic aromatic compounds are cyclic, planar, conjugated ring systems containing at least one heteroatom (N, O, S) in the ring, e.g. pyridine and furan.

An aromatic compound must be cyclic, planar, have a continuous ring of p-orbitals (fully conjugated), and contain (4n+2) pi electrons in the ring (Huckel's rule). When one or more carbon atoms of such a ring are replaced by a heteroatom (nitrogen, oxygen or sulphur) that still contributes to the conjugated pi system, the compound is called a heterocyclic aromatic compound.

Examples:

  1. Pyridine (C5H5N) - a six-membered ring analogous to benzene, with one CH replaced by N; the nitrogen's lone pair lies in an sp2 orbital in the plane of the ring (not part of the pi system), so the ring still has 6 pi electrons and is aromatic. …
