Aromaticity needs a cyclic, planar, fully conjugated ring with (4n+2) delocalised pi electrons (Huckel's rule).

For a compound (typically cyclic and unsaturated) to show aromatic character, it must satisfy ALL of the following conditions:

  1. Cyclic: the molecule must be a ring (aromaticity is a property of ring systems).
  2. Planar: the ring must be (or very close to) planar, so that all the p-orbitals can align parallel to one another for maximum overlap.
  3. Complete conjugation: every atom of the ring must be sp2 (or sp) hybridised and carry a p-orbital perpendicular to the plane of the ring, so that a continuous, overlapping pi-electron cloud can form all the way around the ring.
  4. Huckel's rule: the ring must contain a total of (4n+2) pi electrons delocalised over the whole ring, where n is a non-negative integer (n = 0, 1, 2, 3, ...) -- i.e., 2, 6, 10, 14... pi electrons. …
