C6H14 has five chain isomers: n-hexane and four branched isomers, named by IUPAC rules.

For the molecular formula C6H14, the six carbon atoms can be arranged into a continuous (unbranched) chain or into various branched skeletons, giving five distinct chain (structural, skeletal) isomers:

  1. n-Hexane (unbranched):

    CH3-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH3

  2. 2-Methylpentane:

    CH3-CH(CH3)-CH2-CH2-CH3

(a pentane chain with one methyl branch at C2)

  3. 3-Methylpentane:

    CH3-CH2-CH(CH3)-CH2-CH3

(a pentane chain with one methyl branch at C3)

  4. 2,2-Dimethylbutane:

    CH3-C(CH3)2-CH2-CH3

(a butane chain with two methyl branches, both at C2)

  5. 2,3-Dimethylbutane:

    CH3-CH(CH3)-CH(CH3)-CH3 …
