Chain isomers have the same molecular formula but a different carbon-skeleton arrangement (straight vs branched).

Chain isomerism (also called skeletal isomerism) arises when two or more compounds share the same molecular formula but differ in the way their carbon atoms are connected — i.e., in the length and branching pattern of the main carbon chain — while the functional group (if any) remains the same.

Example: For the molecular formula C4H10:
