The Wurtz reaction joins two alkyl halide molecules with sodium in dry ether to give a symmetrical alkane with double the carbon chain; ethyl halide gives butane.

The Wurtz reaction is a method for preparing higher (symmetrical) alkanes by treating an alkyl halide with sodium metal in the presence of dry ether:

2R-X + 2Na --(dry ether)--> R-R + 2NaX

The reaction proceeds via free-radical intermediates, and works best for the synthesis of symmetrical alkanes containing an even number of carbon atoms (since the product R-R has double the carbons of the starting alkyl halide R-X).
