Ethane can be made by hydrogenating ethene or by the Wurtz reaction from methyl halide; it reacts by halogenation (substitution), combustion, and controlled oxidation/dehydrogenation.

Preparation of ethane (any two methods):

Method 1 - Hydrogenation (reduction) of an unsaturated hydrocarbon: When ethene (or ethyne) is passed with hydrogen over a finely divided catalyst (nickel, platinum or palladium), it adds hydrogen to give ethane.

CH2=CH2 + H2 --(Ni, heat)--> CH3-CH3

Method 2 - Wurtz reaction: When methyl bromide (a methyl halide) is treated with sodium metal in dry ether, two methyl groups couple to form ethane.

2CH3Br + 2Na --(dry ether)--> CH3-CH3 + 2NaBr

(Another route: Kolbe's electrolytic method - electrolysis of an aqueous solution of sodium acetate gives ethane at the anode: 2CH3COO^- -> CH3-CH3 + 2CO2 + 2e^-.)

Reactions of ethane (any three):

  1. Halogenation (substitution reaction): In the presence of ultraviolet light (or heat), ethane reacts with chlorine, its hydrogen atoms being replaced one by one by chlorine (free-radical substitution): CH3-CH3 + Cl2 --(UV light)--> CH3-CH2Cl + HCl (Further substitution gives di-, tri- and higher chloro derivatives.)
  2. Combustion: Ethane burns in excess air/oxygen with a blue flame, giving carbon dioxide and water with release of heat: 2C2H6 + 7O2 -> 4CO2 + 6H2O + heat …
