A redox reaction involves simultaneous oxidation (electron loss) and reduction (electron gain); e.g., Zn displacing Cu2+ from copper sulphate solution.

A Redox (reduction-oxidation) reaction is a chemical reaction in which one species undergoes oxidation (loss of electrons, or increase in oxidation number) while another species simultaneously undergoes reduction (gain of electrons, or decrease in oxidation number). Oxidation and reduction always occur together, since electrons lost by one species must be gained by another.

Example: When a strip of zinc metal is placed in copper sulphate solution:

Zn(s) + CuSO4(aq) -> ZnSO4(aq) + Cu(s)

Here:

  • Zn is oxidised: Zn -> Zn2+ + 2e- (oxidation number of Zn increases from 0 to +2) …
