de-Broglie proposed that every moving particle has an associated wavelength λ = h/mv, derived by combining Planck's quantum theory (E = hν) with Einstein's mass-energy relation (E = mc^2).

Statement: Louis de-Broglie proposed that matter, like radiation, has a dual character - it behaves both as a particle and as a wave. Every moving material particle has a wave associated with it, called the matter wave or de-Broglie wave.

Derivation:

For a photon of light of frequency ν and wavelength λ, according to Planck's quantum theory:

E = hν = hc/λ ... (1) (since c = νλ)

According to Einstein's mass-energy equivalence, if the photon is treated as having an effective mass m moving with the speed of light c:

E = mc^2 ... (2)

Equating (1) and (2):

mc^2 = hc/λ

mc = h/λ

λ = h/mc

de-Broglie extended this idea to any material particle of mass m moving with velocity v (replacing c with v for a general particle):

λ = h/mv
