- Electromagnetic spectrum: The electromagnetic spectrum is the complete range of all types of electromagnetic radiation, arranged systematically in order of increasing wavelength (or, equivalently, decreasing frequency and photon energy). It spans, from shortest to longest wavelength: gamma rays, X-rays, ultraviolet (UV) radiation, visible light, infrared (IR) radiation, microwaves, and radio waves. All these forms of radiation travel at the speed of light and differ only in wavelength/frequency/energy.
- Absorption spectrum: When a beam of white (continuous-spectrum) light is passed through a sample of a substance (typically a cool gas or vapour) and the transmitted light is then analysed through a prism, it is found that certain specific wavelengths are missing — they appear as dark lines superimposed on the otherwise continuous, bright rainbow-coloured background. This is called an absorption spectrum. The missing wavelengths correspond exactly to the energy differences between allowed electronic energy levels of the atoms/molecules in the sample — electrons in the ground state absorb photons of just the right energy to jump to higher (excited) states, removing those specific wavelengths from the transmitted beam.
